Intermediate 50/70 Team in LL World Series

For the second time in six years, Scripps Ranch Little League will be sending a team to the Intermediate 50/70 (13YO) World Series!

Behind stellar pitching and clutch hitting, Scripps Ranch this evening battled rain, lightning delay and the continuing heat of Nogales, Arizona to knock off previously undefeated Northern California, 5-0 to take the West Region championship.

With the win, these boys and their coaches will now be traveling to Livermore, CA for the World Series, which begins on Sunday. Scripps Ranch’s first game will be on Monday at 12 noon against either the East or Southeast Region champions.

This team’s journey started in our District tournament on June 14. Since then, it has been 20 games in 42 days in 4 cities. The players and coaches (and family members who’ve attended every game) made five trips to Coronado, three to Encinitas, five to Pasadena and now the trip to Nogales. A total of almost 2500 miles, not counting trips made while at tournament sites. And now, it’s another 460 miles from Scripps Ranch to Livermore.

Proving the resiliency of 13-year-olds, they never seemed to let the hectic schedule affect their play. In those 20 games, their only losses came to defending West Region champ Hawaii in the first game of Regional pool play, and to our own Point Loma team in the first round of the District championship.

Never have they allowed more than 7 runs to an opponent, and 13 times have kept teams to 3 or fewer runs. In 20 games, they have outscored opponents by a 204-49 margin, and tallied double figures on 11 different occasions.

Remarkably, many on this team played together three years ago when they captured District and Section titles in the 8-10 division. They captured District and Section titles a year later in the 9-11 division, and the District flag in the Little League division last year. For manager Lance Taschner, it’s even more impressive, as he was also the manager of the Scripps Ranch team that went to the World Series in 2018. While coaching his youngest son Chase in this tournament run, he has also gotten to coach with both his father and older son.

Now having won District, Section, State and Region championships, Scripps heads to the World Series having won six straight, while allowing a total of only six runs in those games against the best teams in the Western U.S. All games in the Intermediate World Series will be broadcast on ESPN+.
